BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
- born in 1933 in small farming community of Abbott, Texas
- raised by grandparents who introduced him to gospel music
- also influenced by the music of African Americans and Mexican Americans
of the community
- released first single in 1957
- went to Nashville in 1960; wrote hit songs for Ray Price (Night Life)
Faron Young (Hello Walls) and Patsy Cline (Crazy)
- early 1970s played to audiences of "rednecks" and "hippies"
- has recorded all forms of country music, honky-tonk, standards, gospel, jazz, pop/rock, blues
- also movie soundtracks, Christmas albums and has sung many duets
- organized annual Farm Aid concerts to aid the struggling farmers
- starred in movies such as Electric Horseman, Honeysuckle Rose,
Barbarosa, Songwriter and others
- has written many songs which have been recorded by other artists
- resides in Austin, Texas
