BRIEF BIOGRAPHY


  • born in 1933 in small farming community of Abbott, Texas
  • raised by grandparents who introduced him to gospel music
  • also influenced by the music of African Americans and Mexican Americans of the community
  • released first single in 1957
  • went to Nashville in 1960; wrote hit songs for Ray Price (Night Life) Faron Young (Hello Walls) and Patsy Cline (Crazy)
  • early 1970s played to audiences of "rednecks" and "hippies"
  • has recorded all forms of country music, honky-tonk, standards, gospel, jazz, pop/rock, blues
  • also movie soundtracks, Christmas albums and has sung many duets
  • organized annual Farm Aid concerts to aid the struggling farmers
  • starred in movies such as Electric Horseman, Honeysuckle Rose, Barbarosa, Songwriter and others
  • has written many songs which have been recorded by other artists
  • resides in Austin, Texas
